Curious County

I took these pictures yesterday whilst outdoors in the bitter Winter temperatures.

I discovered this little newt when I was clearing a pile of leaves by hand. I only just managed to spot it as it was so small, the most tiniest one I have ever seen.

I put it on my hand for scale.

I think he comes under the title 'Curious Suffolk' because I find them very curious. He had such minute little toes, a perfect little amphibian.

They are really interesting aren't they. I am not keen on worms or frogs, an odd thing for a gardener to say i know:-) Must be a very strong self preservation instint that i have which makes me cautious of them. The frogs make me jump when i happen upon them, but i am ok after the initial shock:-)hahaha:-) Worms, well, they are just 'worm like' aren't they.

But.....these little things don't make me jump. I guess because they don't move. I can't think that i would have them on my hand if they wriggled around. The play dead body action is why i can have them on my skin.

The newt in the picture was so tiny. The photo with the view from above clearly shows his '5' toes spread out. They are are well designed creature.

What a cute little thing, i can remember helping out my local primary school and finding something similar with the children, they are curious little things. great photos. :) x

It was well spotted. I only just managed to see it in the leaves.

Most of the time the only sorts of people that would see creatures like this are the 'Outdoor Investigator' types:-)

Me too, they are so interesting to look at.

This one was probably still hibernating as i found him under a small pile of leaves. He was playing dead, which makes them even more fascinating because you can have a really good look at them.

After a brief spell of picture taking i found him a nice sheltered place under leaves, for him to settle down in.

It wasn't until i became a gardener that i saw creatures like this. It's the poking around that finds them. I haven't ever seen them just wandering around, only hiding up:-)
