The Black Boy Hotel in Sudbury, photographed on 1 September 2021 prior to a name change to 'The Lady Elizabeth' (the name on the 'A' board on the pavement). Approval for the name change of this Grade II listed building was given by Babergh District Council on 6 August 2021 (ref.DC/21/02744). The officer's report acknowledged that "the loss of the historic name of the public house was a matter raising a low level of less than substantial harm to a designated heritage asset." After a reference to para 197 of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) the report states: "Following negotiations with the applicant (Greene King Pub Co) it was considered appropriate that a 'historic plaque' should be installed in order to explain the historic name and context of the building in order to preserve the heritage value of the historic name, whilst allowing the name of the pub to be changed." The explanatory plaque is to be placed on the front elevation, facing Market Hill. The plaque has this explanation of the name change: "Research undertaken by Greene King showed that many people felt the name had racist connotations and therefore a decision was made to change it."
